I was raised as an academic and baptized in the way of the scientific method. There were many creative outlets I participated in as a kid but they were just fun things to do on the side. Things like music and art were extracurriculars and hobbies to make me a well-rounded applicant. But they were never a priority.
These days I am attending to my need to innovate, imagine, and express. I thrive on the ability to freely explore and do what I am inspired to do. Sometimes that’s writing. Sometimes it’s singing and sometimes building, doodling, gardening, or painting.
I allow myself to experience all these as important and worthy pursuits for their own sake. In addition to my blog about race, education, and mental health; I am also using this website to share my visual art.
For some, expression and vulnerability can be difficult. Doing it while fighting the impulse to defend or over explain complicates the task.
Acrylic paint helps me illustrate the collaboration and struggle between thought and emotion. I use things like color gradients, bold disruptive shapes, and cryptic doodles to help tell the story of the many ideas and sentiments I often find difficult to express.
I have a somewhat improvised process. My approach to painting is intuitive. I discover what message is trying to get out and how it wants to be expressed in that moment.
